Jonathan Calleri

Jonathan Calleri is an Argentine professional soccer player who currently plays as a striker for Ajax Amsterdam in the Eredivisie and the Argentina national team. Regarded as one of the top forwards in Europe, Calleri has enjoyed a successful career spanning both domestic and international competitions.

Early Career in Argentina

Born in 1993 in Buenos Aires, Calleri joined the youth academy of his hometown club San Lorenzo at a young age. He quickly rose through the ranks, making his first-team debut for San Lorenzo in 2012 at the age of 19. Calleri quickly established himself as a regular starter and goalscorer, helping San Lorenzo win the Argentine Primera División title in 2013 and 2014.

Calleri's performances drew interest from clubs across South America and Europe. However, he opted to remain with San Lorenzo, becoming a fan favorite for his commitment to the club and community. In 2015, he was named the Argentine Primera División's Player of the Year after leading the league in goals scored.

Move to Ajax Amsterdam

In the summer of 2015, Calleri made the surprise decision to leave Argentina and join Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The Dutch club had been monitoring the young striker for several years and saw him as the ideal replacement for their aging talisman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Calleri's transition to European football was seamless. He quickly adapted to Ajax's attacking style of play, forming a lethal partnership with attacking midfielders Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech. In his first season, Calleri helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title and reach the final of the UEFA Europa League.

Over the next several years, Calleri continued to excel for Ajax, winning the Eredivisie three more times and guiding the team to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019. He has consistently been one of the top scorers in the Eredivisie and has also made a name for himself in European competitions, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2017.

International Career

Calleri's performances at Ajax did not go unnoticed by the Argentina national team. He made his debut for La Albiceleste in 2016 and has since become a regular starter, forming a formidable strike partnership with Lionel Messi.

Calleri was a key member of the Argentina squad that won the Copa América in 2017 and the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2019. His ability to link up with Messi and score crucial goals in big matches has made him an indispensable part of the national team.

At 28 years old, Calleri is currently at the peak of his career. He continues to be one of the most prolific and well-rounded strikers in world football, combining clinical finishing, aerial ability, and tireless work rate. Ajax and Argentina fans alike will be hoping he can lead them to further success in the years to come.
